Banjos and fiddles In September of 1970, the Julian Lions Club had their first Banjo Fiddle contest. Local musicians were invited to the local high school football field to "see who was the best" and spend a day jamming with friends. The stage was a flatbed trailer provided by a local hay hauler. It was so much fun that it became the Julian Lions Club annual fund raiser event.

After a couple of years, the event was moved to Frank Lane Park, where a permanent stage was constructed. Later, a food concession building was also added.

Over the years, the festival evolved from a one day event to a two day event, from strictly a contest format, to a festival with paid professional bands. At one point, it became more country music and later Bluegrass music, mostly based on the third party promoters hired to handle the entertainment portion of the event. The contest portion of the event was eventually all but dropped since promoters were much more comfortable scheduling bands than running a contest.

In 2010, the music festival returns to its roots with the return of the contest, while still retaining the music concert portion of the event. Saturday will be the contest concluding with a couple professional bands and Sunday will be a day of professional entertainment.

Forty years of fun in two days!
